Chelmsford Junior Netball Club
was started in the early 1970’s by
Jean Armstrong
(President of the Chelmsford Senior Netball Club and one of
the founders of the Chelmsford and District Netball
League). She started training a group of about 10 girls and
called them "Rainsford School" as that was where training
was held.
As more
girls joined, Jean changed the name to
Chelmsford Junior Netball Club
and the venue was moved to Hylands School.
During those early
years Jackie Webb
(our Chairperson) was one of those girls. Jackie’s Mum
Beryl Webb
(still a manager/umpire with the club) also helped with the
umpiring and was later joined by
Val Baker
(still a manager with the club) who assisted with the
training. Pam Swain
(who has sadly passed away) was the Treasurer and helped
with the umpiring.
In 1991 Jean Armstrong moved to Devon and the
leadership of the club was taken over by
Jeanne
McCann
(currently
Chairperson of the Chelmsford & District
Netball League). As the Club was increasing in size the
venue was changed to Moulsham School during the winter and
in the summer months training was held at Writtle Sports and
Social Club hard courts.
At the
beginning of September in 1999
Jackie Webb took over
8 teams from Jeanne McCann and the popularity of the club
grew to the extent that within a year Jackie was running 13
teams, 4 of which were in Year 7. Again, because of the
size of the Club, the venue was changed to New Hall School
at Boreham. This venue gave us the added advantage of more
courts and an inside Sports Hall.
With the
help of all our Team Managers:
Jackie Webb, Linsey Thomas, Val
Baker, Gill Wright, Kate Lincoln, Tessa Hunt, Hazel Webster,
Beryl Webb, Jeanne McCann, Kate Ellmore and our
helpers Jean Armstrong, Gaynor
Dimond, Rosie Wright, Charlotte Dodd, Ailish Wincott, Abi
Marshall, Emma Beadle, we have made the Junior
Club the biggest in the Chelmsford Area.
To date
Chelmsford Junior Netball Club
has 11 teams in the Chelmsford & District Junior Netball
League ranging from Year 6 to Year 10/11. The Club also has
a very strong Development Squad of 30+ youngsters in Years
